CENTRAL CAROLINA'S CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS

Sensory Friendly Performances

With a mission to entertain, educate and enrich audiences, Temple Theatre is now proud to be able to offer and create a positive, fun, and encouraging atmosphere for families with sensory needs. Through this new program at Temple Theatre, families with sensory challenges will be able to participate in the transformational experience of live theatre, and be inspired to creatively contribute to the world and their community in their own way.

Temple Theatre is dedicated to inclusion and invites families with sensory needs and other social, cognitive, and physical challenges to participate in our sensory friendly performances. In our continued effort to grow the appreciation and accessibility of live theatre, the inclusion of such programing welcomes families with sensory sensitivities and other challenges in a fun and understanding environment.

What is a Sensory Friendly Performance?

A Sensory-Friendly Performance is a performance in which certain production elements such as light and sound cues are adjusted slightly to even out or soften the sensory experience of the show, or removed altogether. The performance may also offeraccommodations outside of the show itself, such as a relaxation/quiet area, an activity area, family/non-gendered bathrooms, and FAQs for parents and caregivers. Ushers for these performances receive some special training, and volunteers are on hand in the house and lobby to support families who need it. Audience members are welcome to bring snacks, toys, and fidgets (objects that can help soothe and focus individuals on the autism spectrum) into the theatre with them, and are welcome to exit and return to the theatre whenever they need to.

Most importantly, a Sensory-Friendly Performance is a true judgment-free zone. The theatre staff models that everyone is welcome and released from the traditional expectations about sitting still and staying silent. Everyone is free to respond, move, speak, or self-sooth in whatever way they need to enjoy and experience the performance.

Accommodations for these Performances Include:

  • Lower sound level, especially for startling or loud sounds
  • Lights remain on at a low level in the theater during the performance
  • No strobe lighting or lighting focused on the audience
  • Patrons are free to talk and leave their seats during the performance
  • Designated space in the last two rows of the theater for standing and movement
  • Temple Theatre staff trained to be inviting and accommodating to families’ needs
  • Online and printed guidance materials about the show experience
  • Audience members are welcome to bring their own manipulatives, seat cushions, comfort objects, and extra support items to the show.
  • Actors are available for a meet and greet after the performance!
