On Feb. 29 the Heart of Carolina Jazz Orchestra, directed by Gregg Gelb, presents guest artists the Brandon Mitchell Jazz Quartet performing “The Sounds of the Modern Jazz Quartet” plus big band music performed by the Heart of Carolina Jazz Orchestra.

The music to be performed in this concert will be music from the world-famous Modern Jazz Quartet performed by the Brandon Mitchell Jazz Quintet and big band music performed by the Heart of Carolina Jazz Orchestra. 

Originally from Washington DC, Brandon Mitchell is an active vibraphonist in the North Carolina music scene. After recently completing his master’s degree in jazz studies at North Carolina Central University and a bachelor of arts degree in percussion performance from Elon University, Mitchell has had the opportunity to perform all over the east coast including Maryland, New Jersey, Virginia, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida, to name a few. He has toured abroad to Italy several times including performances at the Jazzit Festival, Teatro Piccolo in Milan, and a Notte Bianca performance
in front of the Duomo. He has also had the opportunity to perform next some of the greats including Branford Marsalis, Joey Calderazzo, Jon Metzger and John Fedchock. The Brandon Mitchell Jazz Quartet is Brandon Mitchell, jazz vibraphonist; Andrew Berenson, piano; Donovan Cheatham, drums; Aaron Gross, bass.

The Heart of Carolina Jazz Orchestra, founded by Gregg Gelb, has brought top quality jazz performances to central North Carolina for the past 25 years and is dedicated to presenting, performing and educating audiences in what is recognized as America’s classical and original music – Jazz. He is a well-known and respected musician and composer throughout North Carolina, winner of the 2018 City of Raleigh Medal of the Arts, and has distinguished himself as director/conductor of the award-winning student band, the Triangle Youth Jazz Ensemble, which has been a finalist at the Jazz at Lincoln center Essentially Ellington competition for the last four years and is the only band from North Carolina to ever have been in the finals. The HOCJO is a non-profit organization and it received a grant for this concert from the Lee County Arts Council through the grassroots program of the North Carolina Arts Council.
