CENTRAL CAROLINA'S CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS

Our Story

Temple Theatre is one of North Carolina’s premier regional theatres, offering Broadway-quality productions in the heart of downtown Sanford. Each season showcases a captivating blend of performers from the nation’s top theatre markets alongside some of North Carolina’s most talented local artists.

Housed in a beautifully restored historic building, Temple Theatre offers an intimate setting where every seat feels close to the action. Its classic architecture and inviting atmosphere create a unique connection between performers and audience.

The result is an experience that feels both world-class and close to home — where every show brings powerful performances and moments families remember for years to come.

Our Mission

Under the leadership of Peggy Taphorn, Producing Artistic Director since 2007, Temple Theatre has become a must-visit destination for audiences across the region. With a passion for storytelling and a deep commitment to making the arts accessible to everyone, Peggy has transformed the theatre into a vibrant hub for creativity and community connection. Her vision is simple yet profound: to ensure that every person who walks through the doors—whether they’re attending a performance, taking a class, or volunteering—feels the joy, belonging, and inspiration that only the performing arts can bring.

Building on that vision, Peggy has also expanded the theatre’s educational programs, ensuring the magic of the arts extends beyond the stage. Through the Temple Academy, students of all ages can take part in year-round classes, camps, and performances that inspire growth both on and off the stage. Under the guidance of professional instructors, participants gain skills in collaboration, performing, and stagecraft while experiencing the thrill of being in a professional theatre environment.

A Rich History

Built in 1925 as a vaudeville house, Temple Theatre stands today as a monument to Sanford’s rich artistic legacy. Nearly a century ago, the theatre was a hotspot for New York-based troupes traveling south to Florida, thanks to its prime location just minutes from the railroad station. In its earliest days, Temple Theatre brought world-class entertainment to a growing community, showcasing variety acts and silent films that connected Sanford to the broader world of performance and storytelling.

As the railroad boom subsided and times changed, the theatre adapted to meet the community’s evolving needs—serving over the years as a movie theatre, a furniture store, and a men’s clothing outlet before closing its doors in 1965. Its story might have ended there, but the Sanford community rallied to save it. In 1981, the son of the theatre’s original owner led a grassroots restoration effort, securing its registration as a National Historic Site and a grant from the North Carolina Legislature. After three years of renovation, the Temple Theatre reopened in 1984, retaining much of its original architecture while ushering in a new era of live performance.

Today, more than a century after its original debut, Temple Theatre continues to honor its past while looking toward the future. What began as a stop for traveling vaudeville acts has evolved into a creative cornerstone that brings people together through the power of the performing arts.

From professional productions to youth programs and community events, Temple Theatre stands as a testament to what can happen when passion, artistry, and local pride take center stage.
